Dix auteurs de littérature jeunesse anglo-saxonne écrivent chacun un des dix chapitres du roman. Les histoires tournent autour de George Keane, un photojournaliste renommé, et mettent en scène ses deux petits-enfants, Jason et Maggie, ainsi que les personnes qui ont été photographiées au cours de sa carrière (un adolescent de Dublin, un soldat japonais mutilé, un jeune prisonnier russe, etc.). -- Les chapitres, de valeurs inégales, peuvent se lire séparément.
