Avec la Révolution, les cathédrales et les plus belles de nos églises tels les châteaux, remparts, antiquités... deviennent des Monuments historiques. Immobilisées dans le temps, elles sont condamnées à rester telles qu'elles ont été conçues, ou revues de manière à ce qu'elles puissent traverser les siècles sans être dénaturées ou détruites... Se pose alors la question de l'édifice cultuel et de son avenir puisque celui-ci, décidément vivant, ne peut se concevoir tel un monument, un cliché, témoignage d'un instant de l'histoire de notre pays.
