Oren Yiftachel presenta una nueva teoría crítica y un nuevo marco comparativo para explicar la geografía política de las sociedades etnocráticas. Para Yiftachel, una etnocracia es un régimen político que facilita la expansión y el control de tierras en disputa por parte de un determinado grupo étnico. En este régimen, los derechos y las capacidades jurídicas dependen básicamente del origen étnico y la ubicación geográfica. Para el autor «en el caso israelí, la etnocracia se manifiesta como una continuada estrategia sionista de judaización del hogar nacional, construido durante el último siglo como la Tierra de Israel, entre el río Jordán y el mar Mediterráneo».
