Charles Montague is facing ruin from his gambling debts. His childhood sweetheart, the clever and selfish Isobel Dysart, suggests he woo Caroline Dysart, the neglected daughter of a wealthy merchant. Charles follows through with the plan, and Caroline falls in love with him. What Isobel fails to foresee though is that Charles unexpectedly falls in love with his new wife, which leads Isobel to take a terrible revenge.
