May 5, 2011 | Edited by John Elliott | The author of this book is Rafael Vargas-Hidalgo to whom the historian community is much indebted. There are some envious historians that want to diminish his work by saying that the author is Philip II which is absolutely ridiculous. Dr. Vargas-Hidalgo discovered these completely unknown letters (more than one thousand), developed an original and most scientific system of transcription, enriched the material with more than one thousand other letters mainly from Andrea Doria, Giovanni Andrea Doria and many coming from the Vatican Archive. He presented this work with an extraordinary study of the letters. In this sense these letters are just an appendix to his study. Furthermore, he created a many hundred pages dictionary of biographies, geographical denominations, military terms, etc which stands as a book in itself. It has the most complete cronology of the period, etc, etc, etc. So please give due respect to the author of this magnificent work Dr. Rafael Vargas-Hidalgo and leave Philip II enjoying the peacefulness of his tomb unable to write any book. A book is a complex creation, especially in the case in point. If this book would just carry the letters with a couple of observations we could speak of an editor. But this book is based upon an original idea (a hypothesis of work since the letters were unknown), with a new scientific system of transcription, an important study of the letters themselves, an enrichment with an extraordinary set of documents, a dictionary of 330 pages, etc. The author of this book is Rafael Vargas-Hidalgo |
