his is a story that starts out in 1865 when young Adam Burke's life was changed forever. Then it jumps ahead to Adam years later, as he is a successful Philadelphia lawyer who is engaged to be married. But when Adam decides to fulfill his dream and head West to open up his own practice, his fiancee breaks off the marriage and leaves Adam heartbroken and upset one rainy night as he heads home in his carriage. Adam will accidentally kill a woman with his horse and carriage. But he will still head to North Platte, Nebraska to escape his memories.

Adam loves his new life but is lonely and seeks a mail order bride. Rachel Mason (who you will meet at the beginning of the story) answers Adam's advertisement and soon this young couple will meet and fall in love and get married. This is when the story really gets interesting. Adam's past will catch up with him and he will truly learn the meaning of "blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy".
