Au tournant du siècle dernier, la " neurasthénie " devint la " maladie du jour ". Cet état d'épuisement nerveux d'origine fonctionnelle, importé du nouveau Monde, fut fort bien reçu dans l'enseignement de Charcot. Il connut un énorme succès pour englober aux yeux d'un vaste public, en tant que " maladie de la civilisation ", l'ensemble des affections de ceux qu'on appelait alors les " petits mentaux " : névrosés et déprimés de ville. Freud en fit le point de départ de ses théories des " névroses actuelles ".
