Nightingale nous raconte l'histoire de Philomèle, fille du Roi Pandion d'Athènes, victime de la luxure de son beau-frère Téréus, roi de Thrace. La pièce nous montre, avec une passion rare, la violence engendrée par tout silence forcé : après avoir été violée, Philomèle se fait arracher la langue par son agresseur. Il s'ensuit un cycle de rétribution qui ne prendra fin que lorsque les dieux interviendront, transformant Philomèle en rossignol.
