"To 'Aunt Fanny's' little Alice,--in the hope that ... she may ... contrive to make ... a substitute for the inimitable 'Nightcaps.'"--Dedication, page [3]. Frances Barrow (i.e., "Aunt Fanny") wrote the Nightcap series of children's books. The work in hand has also been attributed to Lydia Maria Child by the University of Chicago in NUC pre-1956. This attribution is not substantiated in BAL.
