Biography of Juan Manuel Calderon (1941) the first musician and composer to record bachata, an urban musical genre that originated in the Dominican Republic in the early 1960. This new sound emerged from the barrios in Santo Domingo that were inhabited by the campesinos that migrated in huge numbers after the assassination of Dominican dictator Rafael L. Trujillo. Puerto Rican singer Odilio González (1937), known artistically as El Jibarito de Lares, a child star who had a very unique and androgynous voice and had an enormous influence on Dominican musicians that created this new sound called bachata.
