"The ensō or empty circle decorating the broadsheet is an iconic image in Zen Buddhist art and perhaps the most common subject of Zen calligraphy. ... It is appropriate that I used the ensō as the single visual image to accompany William's poem. William was a practitioner of Zen Buddhism. It was his Zen practice that led him to Hawaii to study with Zen master Robert Aitkin Roshi in the 1970's. ...
