A selection of images from one of the artist's most important and seminal works: of the famous série Maciel, 61 photographs taken in the neighborhood of the same name in Pelourinho, in the city of Salvador (Bahia), which the photographer attended for six months in 1979. Throughout the exhibition, the boundaries between the public and the private become less clear. The collective space of the street invades residences, brothels and commercial establishments, and vice versa thus reveals some of the many expressions of the sexuality of that community, denouncing, from it, the social and racial inequalities suffered by marginalized populations in Brazil. The exhibition is part of the program project "Histórias da Sexualidade" (Stories of sexuality) that opened with the exhibitions of Toulouse-Lautrec and Wanda Pimentel.

Work Description

The photographs of Miguel Rio Branco embody the richness, complexity, and sensuality of contemporary Latin America. David Levi Strauss elucidates the world of Rio Branco, leading the reader deep into its mysteries. Miguel Rio Branco is a portrait of heat, vitality, and diversity in life and in the landscape. It is the first comprehensive collection of his work to be published outside of Latin America.

Miguel Da Silva Paranhos Do Rio Branco was born in 1946 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. He is a photographer, painter, cinematographer, film director, and creator of multimedia productions. Since 1980 Rio Branco has been a correspondent for Magnum Photos.
