Samuel Frederick Strain was born in December of 1895 near Embreeville, Tennessee on the Nolichucky River. His parents were Samuel Harvey Strain and Mary Elizabeth Remine. His mother died in 1900 and his father died in 1907. He moved to Kansas in 1912. He attended the University of Tennessee and became a medical doctor. He married Jess Thompson 7 June 1924 in Memphis. They had two sons. He practiced medicine in Tennessee and Mississippi.
