"48 Artotype plates, by E. Bierstadt, from photographs of skin diseases, some plates with more than one photograph. This book and the series on syphilis are the two major photographically illustrated volumes in medical diagnostics during the 19th century in the United States. Both books were hand tinted, which adds an air of surreality. This book was first issued in 1879 and the plates differ somewhat between the editions [cf. CAI NE2698 H3235p 1883; formerly D.A.H. 1883:3]"--Hanson Collection catalog, p. 87.
