For an account of the controversy between Gaffurio and Spataro which occasioned Filippini's pamphlet, cf. Fétis, Biog. univ. de musiciens, 2d ed., v. 3, p. 378-379 (art. Gafor) "Joannes Vaginarius" is the contemptuous name bestowed upon Spataro by Gaffurio.
