Stengt ute fra hjemlandet sitt etter seksdagerskrigen i 1967 levde Mourid Barghouti tretti år i eksil--streifende omkring mange av verdens byer, uten å finne sikkerhet noe sted, separert fra sin familie for årevis av gengen; aldri sikker på om han var en besøkende, en flyktning, en statsborger eller en gjest. På hans første hjemreise siden den israelske okkupasjonen krysser Barghouti en trebro over Jordanelven, og på vei inn til Ramallah er han ikke i stand til å gjenkjenne sin egen barndoms by. Møtet mellom hans gamle minner om Palestina og det han nå opplever forsterker hans forståelse av hva det betyr, ikke bare å være uten et land, men også uten et hjemsted og statusen av å være menneske.
