Edition Notes

Vol. [4] has title: ... Tweede partie, bewerkt door Philip Utenbroeke. Vanwege de Maatschappij der Nederlandsche letterkunde te Leiden uitg. door Ferdinand von Hellwald, dr. M. de Vries en dr. E. Verwijs. Leiden, S.C. van Doesburgh, 1879.

A rimed version of Vincent de Beauvais' Speculum historiale, divided by Maerlant into 4 parts. Pts. 1, 3, and nearly 18,000 verses of the 4th part are by Maerlant, the remainder of the 4th part by Lodewijk van Velthem. The 2d part, of which in 1863 only a few fragments were known, is by Philip Utenbroeke. The discovery by F. Heller von Hellwald of a manuscript (Vienna, Hofbibliothek, no. 13708) containing the entire 2d part, led to the publication of the 4th volume ("Tweede partie") 1879. The 1st part of the continuation, "Voortzetting van den Spiegel historiael vijfde partie" by Lodewijk van Velthem, was published by the Commission royale d'histoire, Bruxelles, 1906 (2 vols., completing the work, to follow)
