Edition Notes

Illustrations: 42 copper engraved plates : etching ; double-page (40) and full-page (2). Except nos. I and XXXXII, all are copies (some reversed and/or slightly reduced) of etchings designed and engraved by G.B. Falda for Le fontane di Roma (1675). 21 are signed: H. Franck sc. (15), Johann Meyer fecit (2), Susanna von Sandrart fecit (2), Azelt sc. (2). Legends in Latin and German; 2 woodcuts in the preliminaries.

Ornaments: 4 prints : etching ; plate mark 11 x 20 cm. or smaller. Allegorical headpieces (2) and historiated initials (2). -- 2 prints : woodcut ; image 7 x 10 cm. and 13 x 19 cm. Vignette on t.p.; tailpiece.

Sometimes ascribed to Joachim von Sandrart (cf. Brunet; Grässe), but the Sandrart named as publisher, presumed author of the address to the reader and descriptive letterpress (p. 3-11), is perhaps Johann Jacob von Sandrart, associated with other pictorial works on Italian architecture.

Issued as the first item with: Li giardini di Roma / disegnate da Giovanni Battisto Falda. [Norimberga : Appresso Giov. Giacomo de Sandrart, [1685?] and: Palatiorum Romanorum à celeberrimis sui aevi architectis erectorum / Ioh. Iacobi de Sandrart. Norimbergae : Sumptibus Ioh. Iacobi de Sandrart, 1694.

Brunet, V, col. 125.

Grässe, VI, p. 264.
