En el prólogo del Nuevas Chacayaleras, José Gabriel dice: "(...) Las chacayaleras de Camino me parecen en la literatura argentina e hispano-amiericana un acontecimiento tan significativo como los cantares de amigo y las serranillas en la literatura española. (...) El defecto común a casi toda la poesía hispano-americana es el de ser preferentemente lírica. (...) Camino -como en el siglo XIX y entre otros Ascasubi, Hernández y Del Campo, como hoy y aquí también, en gran parte Fernández Moreno- salva en su poesía tal defecto adoptando el género dramático. Es, efectivamente, un poeta dramático, aún en sus mismos cantares, que no tienen su voz ni su acento, sino el acento y la voz de otros seres ha quienes ha podido escuchar y ver.(...)"
