In the 1920s and thirties, when Kierkegaard was first becoming known in Germany (thanks to the courageous translation by Gottsched and Schrempf-a very risky venture at the time), and then in France (with the fine translations by Tisseau and Jean Wahl's celebrated Etudes Kierkegaardiennes), he was called on to play a double role: on the one hand as a thinker of protest, on the other as a thinker of renewal.
