"A collection of seven outstanding essays covering the history of indigenous movements and rebellion in Mexico. The goal of the collection is to establish the historical antecedents to the Zapatista uprising. The volume includes discussions of Chiapas (Whiting, Fábregas Puig and Arias Pérez), Oaxaca (Díaz-Polanco and Burguete), Sonora and the Yaqui (Hu-DeHart) the border region (Arrieta), and general changes in indigenous society (Varese). Each essay has been translated into one of four indigenous languages: Chol, Zoque, Tzeltal, and Tzotzil, making the volume an important addition for natives as well as academics"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57.
