George III

An Essay in Monarchy

"This book provides a thematic analysis of the key features of George III's reign. It begins with a discussion of his historical reputation and the controversies which he provoked, notably the allegation that he sought to revive the dormant powers of the Crown. It analyses his important (and often overlooked) role as a major figure in European politics. It examines the King's involvement in British politics and shows that his influence remained considerable until the very end of his active reign in 1810. It considers his contribution to imperial policy, particularly with regard to the revolt of the American colonies and the growth of British power in India.

It breaks new ground by focusing in depth upon George III's religious opinions and their significance for the exercise of his responsibilities as head of the Church of England. In conclusion it identifies the changes in the character of the British monarchy during his reign and assess his responsibility for those changes."--Jacket.
