Excerpts

At her feet were piles of things- bits of leaves, bark, and herbs. Perhaps she did know magic. I didn't want to think of that at all, and so I pushed the thought far away.
The woman took pinches of leaf and bark and herbs from the piles and threw them into the pot, using a long wooden spoon to mix them. I decided then that it did not matter what she was; what mattered was if she could help Elizabeth.
