Romayne Ransom returned from a cancelled house party to find her home crawling with police officers. Her father, arriving home just after her, saw the scene and passed out. Evan Sherwood, head of an organization called The League, proceeded to inform Romayne of the illegal bootlegging activities that had been going on behind and beneath her home. Reeling from that information and learning that her brother was heavily involved with the gang, Romayne struggles to come to terms. Her faith is challenged through the extended illness and death of her father and her brother's escape from prison. A kind nurse and a caring elderly lady do all they can for Romayne as she comes to grips with her new reality. Despising the man who in her mind brought all this suffering down on her, she tries to pick up the pieces of her life and finds employment, all the while fearing the appearance of an evil man bent on getting money from her. A story of misjudged people and forgiveness.
