It contains also biographical notes in regard to some of the cartographers: Arrowsmith, Hermann Berghaus, Adrien Herbert Brué, Thomas Devine, Eugène Duflot de Mofras, Robert Greenhow, John Pinkerton, Henry S. Tanner, Tichmenieff or Tikhmenief and Johann Walch. Maps 1-3, 25, were prepared in the office of the U.S. Coast and geodetic survey
