Constitutes the fourth part, second issues of the first Latin edition and the sole issue of the second Latin edtion of Theodor de Bry's Great voyages, printed in fourteen parts, in Latin, German, French, and English, in Frankfurt am Main, Oppenheim, and Hanau from 1590-1644, and the Elenchus, an outline of the thirteen Latin parts, published by Matthias Merian in Frankfurt am Main in 1634
This work has been identified as a hybrid of the second issue of the first Latin edition and the sole issue of the second Latin edition of the Great voyages by Church
Imprint from colophon
The Roman numeral dates on title pages are made with backwards C's
The second issue of Latin part four can be identified by both title pages printed with the poorly reprinted "privelegio", with the first "e' still somewhat visible, and both title pages with the "Ad invistis Rudolphus II. Rom. imperator"; this edition has textual identifers as follows: p. [4], 1st count, has line 23 ending "dictū, p. [5], 1st count has line 1 ending "Indiae", p. [7], 1st count, has catchword "Artes", p. 1-7, 2nd count, have marginal notes in a roman font, p. 9 has a tail piece, p. 109 is misnumbered 100, the running title reads "Americae liber IIII", and leaf O3 is correctly signed; plates I-XXIIII have Arabic numerals engraved on the coppers, with those of 2, 6, and the 6 of 16 engraved in reverse
Latin translation, by Urbain Chauveton, of book one of: Historia del Mondo Nuovo / by Girolamo Benzoni, first printed Venice, 1565, which was first printed in Latin, Geneva, 1578, under title: Novae Novi Orbis historiae
Despite this being a translation of book one only, as is identified on p. 11, 2nd count, the running title reads: Americae liber IIII and on p. 145 the last line of text erroneously reads: "Finis libri qvarti"
Colophon reads: Impressvm Francofovti ad Moenvm, Typis Ioannis Feyrabend, impensis Theodori de Bry. Anno M. D. LXXXXIIII
This part contains the beginning of Girolamo Benzoni's Historia del Mondo Nuovo. The remainder was published in the parts V and VI. Benzoni's work was first published in Italian at Venice in 1565. It was translated into Latin by Urbain Chauveton. He also translated the work into French. De Bry has followed Chauveton's translation which was published at Geneva in 1578, and has added to it Latin translations of some of the notes which appeared in the French edition. Cf. Church

John Carter Brown Library copy imperfect: the date of 1593 given on the red morocco spine has been printed erroneously
John Carter Brown Library copy the "us" in the word "Rudolphus" in title page transcription nearly rubbed off the page on both title pages, as is reproduced by Church as the title page to the second edition of the fourth Latin part. Church does not elaborate on this change to the copperplate in either the entry to the second issue of the first edition nor the second edition listings; this is the only aspect of this volume which conforms to the second edition description by Church
John Carter Brown Library copy has illustration with the seven coats of arms and six virtues on p. [3], 1st count, double map bound in between p. 10 and 11, 2nd count, and plates appearing both in the first and second states, with the Arabic numerals engraved on the coppers, as printed in the first and second issues of the first Latin edition, and second states, as they appear in the second Latin edition, and are identified in pencil in the upper right hand corner, as they are described by Church
