The 4th ed., following those of 1566, 1572 and 1580, and the first to include Libro 4 by Ruscelli's nephew Vincenzo; see Mortimer. Libro 4 is separately signed and paged
Engraved t.-p. with ornamental border incorporating the arms of Guglielmo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua and Montferrat, to whom the work is dedicated. The t.-p. is signed by Giacomo Francho. Libri 2-4 have special engraved t.-p.'s. That of Libro 4 has the date 1583
Some of the engraved emblems are full page, mostly those of kings, queens and emperors. Two double-page engravings depict Charles V receiving orb and sceptre from Clement VII (O2v-O3r, Bb2v-Bb3r). The first of these is signed G.P.F. by Giovanni Padovano; see Mortimer. Most smaller emblems include the owner's coat of arms in the lower border

Binding: modern goatskin, tooled in blind with fillets, stamps and rolls. Author and title in gilt on spine label
Centered on front pastedown is Roberto Almagia's woodcut bookplate by Bruno da Osimo (see Gelli), and at the upper left-hand corner is the plate of Giovanni Puccinelli Sannini. A small cross potent has been drawn at head of title and at the end of the text on the last p. A small armorial stamp in black ink appears at foot of t.p., the arms now effaced
