The facsimile is a letter from Burns to Johnson
Burns contributed 184 songs, wrote most of the prefaces to the different volumes, and may be said to have edited the 1st edition. The arrangements of the airs were prepared chiefly by Stephen Clarke. cf. Dict. nat. biog., v. 30, p. 16
