Medina only gives the author of this work as the Marqués de Santisteban
The Biblioteca nacional de Mexico attributes the work to Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, marqués de Escalona. Evidences and the textual narrative leads to the conclusion that he is the rightful author of this work
The FHM microfilm series attribues this work to Diego Benavides y de la Cueva, the eighth Count of Santisteban del Puerto, Spanish military officer, diplomat, and colonial administrator who is most known for serving as viceroy of Peru from 1661-1666. He was the son of Francisco de Benavides y de la Cueva, seventh count of Santisteban, who did not serve in office in New Spain
Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco y Zúñiga was the eighth Duke of Escalona, succeeding his father, Diego López Pacheco Cabrera y Bobadilla, marqués de Villena. Diego López Pacheco Cabrera y Bobadilla served as viceroy of New Spain from 1640-1642. In 1640, there was a revolution in Portugal and the Duke of Braganza, the first cousin of the viceroy, was crowned King John IV. Palafox y Mendoza, the visitador general, questioned the viceroy's loyalty and accused him of bieing in league with Portugal. On the evening of June 9, 1642, Palafox y Mendoza ordered that the viceregal place be surrounded by guards. The next morning the viceroy was informed that Palafox y Mendoza had been named as the new viceroy and Diego López Pacheco Cabrera y Bobadilla was moved out of Mexico City and to San Martín Texmelucan as a prisoner. The former viceroy's belongings were sold at a public auction and he was humiliated. A few months after this, he returned to Spain and was found innocent after a short trial. The king restored part of his money and offered to restore him as the viceroy of New Spain. Diego López Pacheco Cabrera y Bobadilla refused and he was named as governor of Sicily and afterwards the viceroy of Navarre. In this memorial, the son defends his father's reputation and refutes the charges against him. Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco y Zúñiga went on to have an illustrious career, even founding the Royal Spanish Academy in Madrid and served as its first director in 1713. In his lifetime, Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco y Zúñiga held the titles of the Duke of Escalona, the Marquis of Villena, the Count of San Esteban de Gormaz, the Count of Xiquena, and the Marquis of Moya
