520 $aThis study provides the first exhaustive description of the materials, techniques and studio practices of Lucas Cranach the Elder. The author describes the characteristic elements of the painters production, drawing on results of technical examination, as well as an evaluation of documentary sources. Approximately 300 panel paintings are examined using a wide range of analytical methods. Furthermore, the author documents the breadth and diversity of Lucas Cranach the Elders unique contribution to 16th-century German canvas painting. The importance of this almost lost part of the court painters oeuvre is completely reassessed. This work is a contribution towards the history of Renaissance painting in Germany with regard to materials and techniques. It offers a detailed, deeper understanding of the various processes of artistic production in the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Elder. There is no similar recent publication on Cranach available (the last monograph on the painter was published in 1974). - Publisher.
