Modern artists experiment with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. A tendency toward abstraction is characteristic of much modern art. This text traces the development of trends and influences in painting, sculpture, photography and architecture from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day.
