520 $a"Worlds Full of Signs compares Greek divination to divinatory practices in Neo-Assyrian Mesopotamia and Republican Rome. First, ample attention is given to background and method; subsequent chapters discuss the divinatory elements – sign, homo divinans, and text - and relate divination to time and uncertainty. This book brings together sources from Mesoptamia, Greece, and Rome, questioning these to consider both the generalities of ancient divination and the specifics of ancient Greek divination. It is argued that the character of Greek divination differed fundamentally from that of two other units of comparison. Greek divination was inherently flexible on many levels: these findings should be connected to Greek views on the future as well as to the relatively low level of divinatory institutionalization"--Back cover.
