520 $aThe Tristan romance has a long history, and this book examines the 13th century version of Gottfried von Strassburg. Jackson reads Gottfried as exploring the problem of reconciling love with a society which recognized sex only in marriage, but regarded marriage as a contract made without love. Gottfried views the claims of society with misgivings, and rather forthrightly argues the vanity of any attempt to reconcile love with society. The critic advances the argument that the poet is exploiting the romance form in order to oppose the conventional presuppositions of that form.
