520 $aIn this well-written, sensitive treatment of an emotional and complex issue, Richard Soloway examines the origins of the modern birth control movement in the wider context of the dramatic decline in fertility that first became apparent in the 1880s. By the time the decline leveled off in the 1930s, the birthrate had dropped by more than half and the average number of children per marriage had fallen from five or six to approximately two. Soloway analyzes how successive generations from the late Victorian period to the Great Depression of the 1930s interpreted and responded to this demographic revolution. Soloway concludes that the responses and proposals of the prominent as well as peripheral figures drawn into the debate about the causes and consequences of the declining birthrate mirrored widespread concerns about the profound economic, social, moral, religious, political, and cultural changes altering England and its influential position in the world. -- From publisher's description.
