500 $aOnce the revolution of May 1810 had begun in Buenos Aires, the local creole government sought to recruit the people of the Banda Oriental, Alto Peru, and the Province of Paraguay to the new movement. To this end, an army was dispatched under the command of Manuel Belgrano, who recruited the population to the cause through diplomacy as well as by force. In this way, initial losses gave way to eventual gains.
