520 $aThis volume presents a specific portion of the works of American artist David Smith (1906-1965). Smith is universally recognized as one of America's greatest sculptors, and although his three dimensional work has been the subject of many books, this study investigates his lesser known work in bronze and clay relief, drawings and paintings. In between sculpture-making, Smith drew, painted, and made reliefs and bronze medallions. Selection of this smaller more-or-less flat work is what is presented in this work. The different types of work here are organized into in periodic batches -- reliefs in the early 30s and late 50s, clay work in the mid-50s, bronze medallions in 1938 and 1945, oil paintings and Abstract Expressionist drawings from 1956 to 1958, spray/template paintings in 1962. The author believes that this reinforces the impression that Smith would get onto an art form of some kind and work at it compulsively until he and the form itself were both exhausted.
