520 $aAbstract: General guidelines for producing instructional materials are presented in this comprehensive manual that examines relevant research findings as well as current practices by typographers in the field. The importance of planning is emphasized throughout the text because of the complex structure and appearance of instructional text, and the increasing number of "non-specialists" producing materials who need assistance to be effective. Components of typographic planning that are discussed include page-size selection; basic planning decisions in layout; use of the typographic reference grid; type sizes, type faces, and spacing; and space and structure. Guidelines are provided on writing for instructional text. Original and revised examples of instructional text illustrate key concepts. General issues that are examined are 1) the function and effectiveness of illustrations, 2) displaying quantitative information (i.e. tables, graphs), and 3) form layout and content. More specialized issues include the design of listed information (i.e. contents pages, references, bibliographies, indexes) and the design, advantages, and limitations of electronic text. The manual concludes with a discussion of problems in evaluating instructional text. A comprehensive bibliography and subject and author indexes are provided. (aje).
