520 $aPlucked from the mean streets of Belfast by a canny old scout, George Best astonished everyone at Old Trafford with his unique gift for the game, bursting into Matt Busby's first team at the age of seventeen. He starred in the 1964/65 title-winning Manchester United side while still in his teens. Fame and adulation soon followed, and 'El Beatle' became football's first pop idol in 1966 after the match of his life against the Portuguese club Benfica in Lisbon. A part of the glorious trinity with Denis Law and Bobby Charlton, Best shone again in 1966/67 when the Red Devils clinched the league title once more, and he was central to the lifting of the European Cup in 1968. He was still only twenty-two and was voted the best player in Europe. From that pinnacle, there was only one way to go, and Manchester United's subsequent decline in domestic football and Northern Ireland's failure in the international game led to frustration and disillusionment for Best. His early retirement at the age of twenty-seven left many fans wondering what he could have achieved had he won the battles with his private demons. But most prefer to cherish the ten years he enthralled supporters and players alike with his skills and humility.
