520 1 $aImages of Arab Women, in an ambitious undertaking, attempts to deal with the status of women and with prevailing concepts about them in ancient, classical and modern periods in virtually all Arab countries. Some of the essays concentrate on legal and sociological matters relating to women's problems and prospects in Arab society caught in change. These essays not only establish the context of the new literary visions of Arab women, but also provide much valuable information about some of the major champions of women's rights - Qasim Amin, Nabawiyya Musa, Al-Tahir al-Haddad, Nawal al Saadawy, et al. - about whose ideas and activities very little has been available in English so far. The book's principal value lies, however, in its analysis of the feminine image in Arabic literature. With an impressive expertise in Arabic poetry and fiction, Mikhail gives us some of the most revealing and dramatic depictions of women in the works of many poets and of the novelists Naguib Mahfouz, Yusuf Idris and Rachid Boudjedra, among others. -- From http://www.jstor.org (Oct. 19, 2016).
