520 $a"The five chapters in this volume are derived from the lectures delivered by Mary May Simon, Trent University's 1992-1993 Visiting Chair of Northern Studies. This endowed Chair was established in 1985 with funds provided by the Canadian Department of the Secretary of State and matched by the university and donors from the private sector. Previous lecturers included a wide range of arctic specialists: Thomas Berger, Terence Armstrong, Dennis Patterson, Peter Schledermann, Fred Roots, and John Parker. As the first woman and the first indigenous person to hold this position, Mary May Simon added an important new dimension to the series. The sub-title of this book, One Future - One Arctic, is adopted from the theme of the 1992 General Assembly of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference (ICC), the last gathering the author presided over as President. This theme, which described the goal of the ICC in developing a unified arctic policy, is also reflective of her own personal commitment"--P.7.
