500 $aBoston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper. Along the spine edge of the letter, there are also four small, evenly-spaced, perforations. On the verso there is a red seal, covered with paper, below the delivery address and near the spine edge of the page. There is a hole extending 1.8 cm from the fore edge, about halfway down the last page, below some black ink stains. Also on this last page, in the head- fore corner, the phrase "MS.A.21.8.76" is written in pencil.
520 $aIn this letter to Amos A. Phelps, Charles Turner Torrey states he has received Phelps letter and has "several things to say" before numbering his responses 1 through 11. In point 1, he tells Phelps he has "given up going to Portland so our meeting will not be deferred on my account." In point 2, he thanks Phelps for his explanation of the resolution passed at Haverhill and tells him he has heard "the majority at Lynn is strong against the disorganizers." In point 3, Torrey says they were offered to take control of the Lynn Record newspaper "on any terms we pleased." In point 4, he says "[Ira] Pettibone lectures for us 3 months." In point 5, he tells Phelps he misunderstood his comment and mentions their "opportunity about a new state paper." In point 6, Torrey wishes Phelps "shall be Pastor of the Marlboro Chapel Church." In point 7, he says he wrote to "Br Leavitt 'confidentially'" and hopes "it won't make him mad and wonder who 'this C.T.T. is'." In point 8, Torrey invites Phelps to Andover and asks him to pass along an invitation to Wendell Phillips in his name. In point 9, Torrey discusses more about obtaining lecturers. In point 10, Torrey writes about some of his "good brethren ... [who try] to prevent by all means any body from coming to one meeting and diffuse all manner of slander in the community." In point 11, he proposes employing Mr. Thomspson "as a State book and money agent." In the postscript, Torrey tells Phelps the Executive Committee is meeting next Thursday and that if Phelps has "any business or plans to suggest" to send them to Torrey.
