520 $aTurner's illustrations and Ritchie's text first appeared in slightly different form in 1833, 1834, & 1835 in three volumes that came to be known as Turner's Annual Tours; the plates were reissued in 1837 as Rivers of France; and the first edition of Liber Fluviorum. was published in 1853. In any of these guises the lovely plates confirm Gordon Ray's verdict that "Turner achieved his best landscapes on steel in this series." [See Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England., 16.].
