520 $aFrom the Blurb: June 1965 is the 750th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta. The occasion is marked by the publication of Professor Holt's fresh and scholarly study of the charter and its importance in English history. The work is prefaced by a study of the manner in which Magna Carta was interpreted to meet changing circumstances in England from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century. It discusses the extent to which it was distorted and the relationship of this distortion to the Whig interpretation of history. Professor Holt then examines the origins of Magna Carta and seeks parallels in the history of France, Sicily, Hungary and the Spanish Kingdoms. He finds precedents in borough charters, in private deeds, in the records of legal actions in the courts and in the articles of the general eyre. Professor Holt discusses the dramatic negotiations which led to Magna Carta and the reactions to it of the Pope. He describes in detail the document of 1215, the various influences which helped to form it, including that of the Archbishop, Stephen Langton, and seeks to reassess the extent to which it both restated custom and created custom. Professor Holt treats the Charter not simply as a legal source, but also as a statement of political thought and as a product of a deep-seated political conflict and a protracted period of negotiation. The story if the amendments to the Charter in 1216 and 1217 is discussed, and so is the origin of the Magna Carta myth. Professor Holt writes first for his fellow scholars; but he does not assume that the reader possesses a specialized knowledge of the circumstances in which John met his barons at Runnymede. The book will be read with enjoyment and understanding by many non-historians.
