520 $aThe intent of this CLIP (College Library Information Packet) Note is to provide data and sample documents that can be used as examples by college and small university libraries that are writing or rewriting their mission statements. A survey was mailed in April 1998 by the College Libraries Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries to library directors at 268 colleges and small universities; a total of 161 libraries responded. The introduction analyzes survey results according to institutional information, mission statement review and development, groups involved in mission statement development, importance of mission statements, and libraries without mission statements. A selected bibliography and a copy of the questionnaire with results are presented. Mission statements of 52 institutions are included, arranged into categories of private institutions with under 2,500 students, private institutions with over 2,500 students, public institutions with under 2,500 students, and public institutions with over 2,500 students.
