520 $aThis bibliography gives the reader access to information on shamanism from the Bering Strait to the Mexican borders and from Maine to Florida. The books covered compare practices from tribe to tribe, make distinctions between witchcraft and shamanism, and discuss the tools of the trade. Native North Americans were at the mercy of the elements, wild animals, the imagined evil spirit or ghost. The survival of these groups often depended upon the wit, strength and foresight of men who had had success in dealing with some of these evil forces. This experience may have come about from the time they had spent seeking a vision, fasting for days in solitude, after which they may have obtained a vision. -- from Intro.
