520 $aWidow Mrs Powell and her daughter, Rhoda, are moving house helped by younger daughter, Delia, and Mrs Powell{u2019}s spinster sister, Aunt Ellen. Mrs Powell and Rhoda can no longer cope in a house that used to have five servants to run it and the house is to be knocked down to make way for a housing estate. Mrs Powell{u2019}s son, Maurice, who is trying to keep the family engineering company afloat drops in during the course of the day and the evening meal is provided reluctantly by his rather cold, social-climber of a wife, Evelyn. Installed by the evening in the new house the women are joined by Delia{u2019}s fiance, Jim. Delia has managed to break free from family life and works in a laboratory in London. Rhoda, on the other hand, is tied to the home at the beck and call of her mother. Delia tries to get Rhoda to break free by suggesting she takes over Delia{u2019}s job which Delia has to give up when she marries Jim. By the end of the day {u2013} and the novel {u2013} Rhoda has decided that she dreads becoming like her self-sacrificing and put-upon aunt Ellen and decides she will leave home.
