520 2 $aThis ethnography studies young people and their use of hip hop culture. Drawing from historical work on hip hop and rap music, as well as four years of research at a local community center, the author argues that contemporary youth are increasingly fashioning notions of self and community outside of school in ways that educators have largely ignored. Attention is given to the influence of artists like the Sugarhill Gang, Run DMC, Eric B and Rakim, Public Enemy, NWA, and the Wu-Tang Clan.
