520 $a"This history of the Democratic Party really includes the history of every town and city where a voter has cast his or her ballot in a national, state, or local election. However, to be complete, such a history would fill volumes. This pictorial history of the Democratic Party covers every presidential election in which a Democrat was a candidate. You will find dates and places where the Democratic Party has been important nationally. Primarily, this history will deal with the national presidential election, which for the most part reflect the Democratic ideologies that have come down to the present day. The Democratic Party held its first national convention in May, 1832, in Baltimore, Maryland. To some attending the convention, the party was still known as the Democratic-Republicans, because its roots went back to the Republicanism of Thomas Jefferson. But the party, which renominated Andrew Jackson for president in 1832, dropped the word Republican from its name at that time - and the Democratic Party was born. The history of the party, therefore, begins in 1832. The Democrats have nominated presidential candidates in every national election since that date. While the Democratic candidates have not always won, the party has been a major force in the American political system for more than 150 years"--Unedited summary from book jacket.
