520 $aThis book provides hands-on puzzle activities for children in grades 1 through 4. Many of the activities can be adapted for children in the middle grades as well. The blackline masters and detailed teacher's notes have been developed to present a variety of geometric and spacial concepts. The activities encourage children to experiment with mathematical concepts and communicate their understanding of the concepts. As children attempt to find solutions for the activities and puzzles, they will use important problem-solving strategies such as predicting, deductive reasoning, evaluating, revising, and recording results. The materials can be used with individual children, with pairs or small groups, or with an entire class. The activities focus on the following mathematical concepts: transformations (slides, turns, flips), tessellations (tilings), symmetry, area, perimeter, congruence, and similarity. The 'More For You' section found on each activity page provides children with the opportunity to extend their learning by applying the concepts developed in the activity in a more challenging situation.
