520 $aArthur Bannister is back for another term at Shiverton, where eerie events are unfolding in the art department. The charismatic new art teacher, Professor Cornwall, is very popular, but why will none of his students tell Arthur what they're painting? However, Arthur has more pressing matters to attend to. Who is the burned stranger, who turns up on his doorstep in the middle of the night with a dire warning? Why does the palm reader in the local magic shop refuse to let him near her? Why are the malicious school bullies suddenly being so nice to him? And what is it, in the corner of his eye, that gives him the dreadful feeling of being watched? As the term progresses, things get even scarier. Children start disappearing from the local town, strange figures begin to materialise in the school's paintings and, worse, Arthur has reason to believe that the Shudder Man - a tall, thin, pale man with flexible bones and no face - has felt his blind way to Shiverton Hall. It's down to Arthur to find out what's going on. But, with the Shiverton blood running strong in his veins, could there be a more sinister plot at play?
